Is Beans (kidney, black, etc.) low FODMAP?
High FODMAP
FODMAP group: GOS (galacto-oligosaccharides)
Serving guidance
High in GOS; canned and rinsed lowers it somewhat, but most beans stay high in normal servings.
Why
Most beans are high in GOS, the FODMAP behind beans' famous gassiness. Canned and well-rinsed reduces it, and small portions of certain beans (like canned lentils) are better tolerated than others.
Low-FODMAP swaps
- Canned lentils (small serving, rinsed)
- Firm tofu
- Tempeh
- Canned chickpeas (1/4 cup, rinsed)
